Microsoft or VMware Horizon View?

RDS or VDI?

As there are many combinations of softwares, operating systems and desktop delivery tools, the standard types of MyDaaS Desktop have been prepared to combine the best of the available options into a simple, choice of 3 selection.

If you're not quite sure of the benefits of each of the following, we've prepared a short summary below outlining strengths and weaknesses of each and as always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or queries regarding any of these details.

Even if you are an engineering team that requires heavy duty CAD/CAMM/GIS/Graphics/3D Power, MyDaaS on Horizon View (graphics acceleration) can deliver the ultimate outcome that rivals your high performance desktop hardware experience --- providing it on any device, anywhere you may be, 24 x 7.

Microsoft RDS

The Microsoft RDS bundle includes everything you need to get your business online with an integrated and easy to use desktop solution. The bundle includes all the servers, software licensing, backups and network security most organisations require as a minimum. In addition to the standard inclusions, the platform has been architected to a level that is generally considered as best practice.

The MS RDS solution is a good, solid option for those businesses who have more standard requirements and ideal for those who already have an existing fleet of Microsoft desktop computers which will provide the local delivery of the cloud desktop.

The key strengths of the solution could be summarised as;

  • Tight integration with the local Windows desktop computer
  • Lowest priced solution
  • Support for up to 16 monitors

The key weaknesses of the solution could be summarised as;

  • The RDP protocol does not perform as well as PCoIP over low bandwidth and high latency links
  • Security defaults are more open enabling easy movement of data (copy/paste) between local devices and the cloud desktop

Summary - The Microsoft RDS solution is perfectly suited for most small businesses and can be maintained easily by most IT support personnel. Performance of the RDP protocol is more than sufficient for most business users and the security defaults are generally what the SMB users are looking for but larger organisations often require tighter security controls which the Horizon View platforms offer.

VMware Horizon View RDS

The VMware Horizon RDS bundle includes everything you need to get your business online with an advanced cloud desktop solution. The bundle includes all the servers, software licensing, backups and network security most organisations require as a minimum. In addition to the standard inclusions, the platform has been architected to a level that is generally considered as best practice.

The Horizon View RDS solution is a great enterprise solution for those businesses who have more advanced requirements than the average small business. The Horizon View platform is also designed with ease of delivery to the end user in mind.

The key strengths of the solution could be summarised as;

  • Greatly Enhanced delivery and accessibility options
  • Desktop delivery options with Horizon Client for nearly every type of device imaginable including Windows, Mac, iDevices, Android, even Amazon Kindle
  • Standard inclusion of the high performance PCoIP protocol
  • HTML/Web Browser access client using the Blast protocol for those times when you're not on your regular machines
  • Ability to switch protocols on the Horizon Client between MS RDS and PCoIP
  • With PCoIP, the cloud desktop screen resolution automatically adjusts itself if window sizes are changed on the local machine
  • Ability to integrate with many enterprise requirements such as dual factor authentication smart cards
  • Increased and more refined control around peripheral and local device management security, control and integration

The key weaknesses of the solution could be summarised as;

  • Integration with local windows computers functions such as copy/paste while using the PCoIP protocol is not as seamless as the Microsoft RDS solution, but this is not really a weakness as the user can always swap between protocols as required if enabled.

Summary - The VMware Horizon View RDS solution is a great solution for organisations requiring greater control over the data security and data assets. The inclusion of the PCoIP and Blast protocols provide for much greater performance and accessibility for users. The Horizon View solution is a very powerful remote desktop delivery system with great options and performance capability.

VMware Horizon View VDI

Adding to the above benefits of the VMware Horizon View RDS bundle, the View VDI bundle brings with it may additional features including;

  • Ability to deploy Windows Desktop operating systems (such as XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1)
  • Integration with video Hardware GPU graphics acceleration cards such Nvidia K1 and K2 for the best performance
  • Individual desktops per user for the greatest diversity of deployment options
  • Ability to access the greatest desktop performance from virtually any device with great delivery, even on a train over a 4G mobile card.

The key weaknesses of the solution could be summarised as;

  • Cost - By adding all the options cost increases in comparison to the RDS solutions, however, in most cases, VDI still delivers at a lower, or similar price point than deploying multiple desktop PCs with similar performance capability, without the negatives of the physical desktops

Summary - If a VDI solution is needed, then this can still be delivered with much greater 'value' than deploying a regular desktop fleet.

Mix-n-match

Perhaps you can see your organisation requiring the best of both worlds, even perhaps mixing all 3 of the above bundles ???

Not a problem, our engineers can work with you to design a deployment which takes into account your requirements, mixes and matches the above solutions and delivers a customised outcome that takes advantage of all of the best features. With enhanced performance, the highly secure environment will be accessible from anywhere, anytime on almost any device to meet your business needs.
